Why I Wrote “Renovation with Confidence” (and Why the Process Isn't as Scary as It Looks)

Renovating your home in New South Wales can feel overwhelming before you've even begun — the approvals, the acronyms, the fear of getting something wrong. I wrote Renovation with Confidence because it doesn't have to be that way. After years of sitting across the table from homeowners who felt lost, I wanted to put the plain-English answers in one place.

Why I wrote this book

As an accredited building designer, I saw the same thing again and again: smart, capable people who felt completely overwhelmed the moment planning rules and approvals came up. Not because they weren't capable — but because no one had ever explained the process to them in language that made sense.

I wrote this book to be the conversation I'd have with them before they spend a dollar: honest, clear, and on their side.

Most of the stress comes from not knowing the order of things

When people say renovating is daunting, what they usually mean is that they don't know what happens first. Do you need council? A private certifier? A designer?

The truth is that almost every renovation in NSW follows one of three approval pathways — Exempt Development, Complying Development (CDC), or a full Development Application (DA). Once you can see those three lanes clearly, most of the mystery disappears, and you can work out which one your project fits in minutes rather than weeks.

You don't need to become a planning expert

You don't need to memorise legislation to renovate well. You need a map — a sense of the sequence, the questions to ask, and the traps to avoid.

That's what the book gives you: how to set a realistic budget with a contingency that actually holds, how to assemble and vet your team, how the approval process works step by step, and what your rights are if something goes wrong. It also includes ready-to-use budget, scope-of-works and selection templates, so you're never starting from a blank page.

Written in plain English, for real people

This isn't a textbook for planners. It's written for the homeowner standing in their kitchen wondering if their idea is even allowed. Every pathway and every rule is explained the way I'd explain it to a friend — no jargon without a translation.

It really isn't as daunting as it looks

The most common thing I hear after someone reads it is relief — 'oh, that's actually simpler than I thought.' Renovating is a big decision, and it deserves care. But 'careful' and 'terrifying' aren't the same thing.

With the right information in front of you, up front, you can move forward with genuine confidence — which is exactly why the book has the name it does.
